A Guide to Having a Positive Electrolysis Experience

You've probably heard a lot about electrolysis. Some may complain that it takes too long, while others may complain that it is painful. Whatever your issue, there are numerous things you can do to make your electrolysis treatment easier. Please read the following tips for a "smooth" session:

  1. Stay out of the sun for 48 hours before your treatment to avoid blood vessel dilation, and wear sunscreen!

  2. Make sure your skin is properly moisturized. Using a light, simple lotion the day before or on the day of treatment will keep your skin from drying out. Please contact us if you have any questions about recommended products for moisturizing before treatments. In our office, we recommend and sell a variety of brands. Avoid using any ointments or creams that could dehydrate your skin, such as witch hazel, prior to your treatment. Witch hazel is ideal to use after treatment because it is anti-inflammatory and helps to tighten newly opened pores.

  3. Drink plenty of water! Hydration is essential for keeping the skin soft and flexible, which impacts many aspects of electrolysis treatments. As the electrolysis probes will slide effortlessly into the hair follicle to break them. When you are dehydrated, hairs can rupture at the surface during tweezing, leaving your skin less smooth than it could be. Hydration can even render the treatment less painful overall, and it can also help the skin heal faster. There is no need to drink too much water, as you will not want to be hopping to the bathroom throughout your treatment.

  4. Try to remain calm. A hectic or stressful day may result in a more painful electrolysis session. This is due to the fact that the skin may be more tight and sensitive during this time. Before and during the appointment, try to take some deep breaths or listen to music. We provide light music in our office, which usually helps to relax or reduce any tension.

  5. Before your appointment, avoid caffeine and sugar. This can irritate you and make your skin more sensitive.

  6. Some people find that being tired for their appointment is beneficial because it allows them to rest. Some patients even sleep on the treatment table. Taking this time to rest may help it go faster and less painfully.

  7. Allow the electrologist to tweeze any ingrown hairs. We are experts in this field! We can see the hair beneath the skin and the direction it is growing with our strong light and proper angle. Such hairs are capable of being successfully treated. There is no need to wax, shave, or pluck these ingrown hairs on your own because it may cause inflammation or worsen the problem.

  8. To reduce discomfort during the appointment and any swelling or aching afterwards, take a mild pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment.

  9. Another method for reducing pain is to use a cooling spray, which temporarily numbs the skin. If you are interested, please ask about it during your appointment, as we have some available.

  10. Put on something comfortable. Wearing anything too tight can cause irritation in the newly opened follicles. Loose-fitting clothes will aid in the healing process by allowing the skin to breathe and have access to fresh air.

  11. If you have a much longer treatment, then eat a snack or meal beforehand. This will keep you satisfied and at ease throughout your session.

  12. Certain times of the month may affect your pain threshold for female clients. Many women discover that the week preceding and during menstruation is usually more sensitive. It is entirely up to you whether you want to avoid scheduling appointments at this time. Please keep in mind that at Limoges Beauty we can always use a lower setting during this time if you still want to be treated. Whether you've been doing electrolysis for years or are just getting started, we hope these pointers make your next session the best yet!
